The Message for Protestants and Catholics on

The Prophecies of the Protestant Reformation

in the Book of Revelation

In the Book of Revelation, there are two sets of prophecies that prophesied the major historical events in the last two thousand years of Christian history, the Seven Letters to the Seven Churches (Revelation 2-3) and the Visions on the Scroll (Revelation 6-19). There are two major historical events that were prophesied in both sets of prophecies, the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great Patronized Christianity in the fourth century and Martin Luther Started the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century.

There is no dispute regarding the significance of Constantine the Great Patronizing Christianity, which turned the Roman Empire into the first Christian kingdom on the earth. However, there is a different opinion regarding the Protestant Reformation among Christians, as Protestant Christians and Catholics have totally opposite positions on this Reformation movement.

Now, let’s see what God prophesied this Protestant Reformation in the Book of Revelation two thousand years ago.

1. The Letter to the Church in Sardis

In the Book of Revelation, the Seven Letters to the Seven Churches not only contain the messages of Christ for the early churches, but also contain the prophetic meaning for the future of Christianity.

The Seven Letters to the Seven Churches

The Seven Periods/Phases of Christianity in History

The Letter to the Church in Ephesus

30 A.D. - 100 A.D. Apostolic Phase of Christianity
This was the period that the Apostles of Christ were preaching the gospel and established the new churches across the Roman Empire.

The Letter to the Church in Smyrna

100 A.D. - 313 A.D. Persecuted Phase of Christianity
This was the period that Christians were under severe persecution in the Roman Empire.

The Letter to the Church in Pergamum

313 A.D. - 590 A.D. Elevated Phase of Christianity
This was the period that Christianity was elevated to become the state religion of the Roma Empire.

The Letter to the Church in Thyatira

590 A.D. - 1517 A.D. Authoritative Phase of Christianity
This was the period that the Roman Catholic Church was given the power and authority over the Christendom in Europe.

The Letter to the Church in Sardis

1517 A.D. - 1730s A.D. Reformed Phase of Christianity
This was the period that Reformation started across Europe and Protestants went to the New Continent of America.

The Letter to the Church in Philadelphia

1730s A.D. - 1900s A.D. Missionary Phase of Christianity
This was the period that the Great Awakening started in the New Continent of America, which gave birth to the New Nation of God, the United States of America.

The Letter to the Church in Laodicea 1900s A.D. - 2000s A.D. Apostate Phase of Christianity
The was the period that Christianity declined and yield to the secularism, and materialism and atheism took over the mainstream ideology of the society.

In the letter to the Church in Sardis, the title of Christ is “He who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.” (Revelation 3:1) This indicated this letter is emphasizing on the spiritual perspective of the Word of God.

In the letter, Christ wrote, “I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.” (Revelation 3:1-2) This prophesied the corruption of the church at the later stage of the Dark Age when people gradually lost their faith and fell into the sins of corruption and sexual immorality.

"Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.” (Revelation 3:3) This is the warning to the church for them to go back to the original teaching of Jesus Christ and the essence of Christianity, the salvation of Christ through Faith and Repentance. That’s exactly the principle of the Protestant Reformation, the “Five Solas” (Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, Soli Deo Gloria). This also warned people if they don’t hold on to their faith and repent, there would be the judgment of God upon them.

"Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.” (Revelation 3:4-5) This indicated there would be some people during this period of time “who have not soiled their clothes” with the sins of corruptions. They would be “dressed in white” as their sins were redeemed by the blood of Christ, and they would be acknowledged by the Holy Father and his angels.

This prophecy was fulfilled by the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther started in 1515, which was also confirmed in the vision on the scroll in Chapter 7 of the Book of Revelation.

2. Chapter 7 of the Book of Revelation

At the end of Chapter 6 of the Book of Revelation, after the sixth seal was opened, “There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.” (Revelation 6:12-13) This indicated the “Dark Age” during the Medieval Age after the Church fell into the sins of corruptions.

“Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, 'Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?'” (Revelation 6:15-17) This indicated that the people of this Dark Age also knew that they had fallen into the sins against the Word of God and they would face the Judgment of God soon, which confirmed Christ’ warning in the letter to the church in Sardis, “if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.” (Revelation 3:3)

Then, at the beginning of Chapter 7 of the Book of Revelation, God already planned to carry out his judgment on this wicked generation by sending his four angels to the four corners of the earth, “holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.” (Revelation 7:1)

However, due to His mercy and love for His people, God wanted to give people the “second chance” before the judgment of God was carried out. Thus, He sent an angel with the Seal of the Living God to put the judgment on hold. “He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: ‘Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.’” (Revelation 7:2-3)

That “Seal of God on the forehead of the servants of our God” is the “Faith in Christ”. And those who did not participate in this “Sola Fide / Faith Alone” Reformation movement would face the “Disaster of Locusts” prophesied in Chapter 9 of the Book of Revelation, which was to harm “only those people who did not have the seals of God on their forehead.” (Revelation 9:4) That “Disaster of Locusts” was the French Revolution, and that king named “Apollyon” was Napoleon who eventually led France and Italy to the total defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. That’s the disaster for those nations that did not participated in the Protestant Reformation and "put the 'Seal of God' on their foreheads".

In Chapter 7 of the Book of Revelation, there were 144,000 sealed and the great multitude in white robes, which confirmed the prophecy of “The one who is victorious will be dressed in white” in the letter to the Church in Sardis. (Revelation 3:5)

Although these 144,000 sealed were written as they were from the 12 tribes of Israel, they were not historical Israelites or modern-day Jews, but the spiritual lineages of the chosen nation. These 144,000 Sealed were the same 144,000 Chosen people in Chapter 14 of the Book of Revelation, “who had Christ’s name and His Father’s name written on their foreheads.” (Revelation 14:1) And “they would follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among men and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb.” (Revelation 14:4)

Unfortunately, the majority of modern-day Jews still haven’t accept Jesus Christ, the Lamb, as their Savior or Messiah. Therefore, these 144,000 sealed are not the historical Israelites or modern-day Jews, but the faithful followers of Christ. And they will “reign with Christ a thousand years” (Revelation 20:6) after the Messiah of the “Second Coming” comes for the New Millennium of Peace & Wisdom.

3. The Consequence of the Protestant Reformation

After the Reformation, many German states and cities, led by the State of Prussia, adopted the Evangelical Faith of the Reformation as the state religion of those German States, and the United Kingdom also separated from the Roman Catholic Church through their own version of the Reformation that combined some Catholic traditions with the Reformation principle, which was considered as the Middle Way between the Catholic and Protestant traditions. Some of the Puritans came cross the Atlantic Ocean to the new continent of America and eventually set up a New Nation of God, the United States of America. At the same time, France, Italy and Spain remained the dominant Catholic nations that did not participated in the Protestant Reformation. Those Protestants in the Catholic countries were either persecuted to death or driven out of the countries.

The one of the greatest achievements of the Protestant Reformation was to translate the Bible from the ancient Latin language to the local languages that the lay people could read. The most significant version of the translated Bible is the King James Version, which was commissioned and sponsored by King James with the collaboration of over fifty top scholars and priests in the country. It took seven years from 1604 to 1611 to complete this translation and it became the most influential "Authorized Version" in the English-speaking world.

The translated Bible brought the Word of God to the people directly and also brought the Blessing of God to the nations that made the Bible available to their people. Three hundred years later, the Protestant Reformation has shown its consequence. The Protestant dominant nations, like Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States are in a much better situation than those Catholic dominant countries, like France, Italy, Spain, and Latin America.

As prophesied in the Book of Revelation, those who participated in this Reformation would go back to “what they have received and heard; obey it and repent.” (Revelation 3:3) Thus, “they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:14) That’s the power of the grace of God through the salvation of Jesus Christ. Although the Catholic Church later also had their own version of the Catholic Reformation, or Counter-Reformation, they did not reached the spiritual height of the Protestant Reformation prophesied in the Bible's Book of Revelation. That’s the main reason those nations that participated in the Reformation received far more blessings of God than those who did not participate in the Reformation.

After the French Revolution, the "Disaster of Locusts" prophesied in Chapter 9 of the Book of Revelation, the Roman Catholic Church suffered a major blow as the Revolutionary government seized the properties and land of the Catholic Church, dechristianized the country and terminated Christian services in this original 98% Catholic nation. 30,000 priests were forced to exile and hundreds of priests were killed. Even Pope Pius VI was arrested by the French troop commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte and put in prison till his death in 1799. That fulfilled the prophecy that this "Disaster of Locusts" was for the nations that "did not have the seal of God on their foreheads." (Revelation 9:4) It was caused by Lucifer, the "Fallen Star" (Revelation 9:1 & Isaiah 14:12) who opened the Abyss to let out the king "Apollyon" out of the Abyss, Napoleon Bonaparte. (Revelation 9:2 & 9:11) France was totally destroyed after the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. That's the consequence of those nations who did not participate in the Protestant Reformation and put the "Seal of God on their foreheads.

4. The Message for the Catholics and the Protestant Christians

From the spiritual view point, the Protestant Reformation is a major spiritual upgrade in the Christian history as prophesied in the Book of Revelation, both in the Letter to the Church in Sardis and in the vision on the scroll in Chapter 7 of the Book of Revelation. It helps people to have a better understanding of the Grace of God and the essence of Christianity, which is the "Salvation by Faith", and get closer relationship with God and the Lamb directly. Therefore, it’s time for the Catholic church to re-exam this historical and spiritual movement and start a New Reformation for the New Millennium.

Also, from the spiritual perspective, the Catholic Church was following the spiritual lineage of St. Peter, and the Protestants were following the spiritual lineage of St. Paul. Although St. Peter was the “big brother” of the church, St. Paul was the biggest contributor to the New Testament as half of the letters in the New Testament was written by St. Paul. Therefore, I hope the Catholic Church can learn something from the Protestant Church on their way of preaching the Gospel to the people.

At the same time, I want to praise the Catholic Church for their great job in interfaith dialogue with other faiths in the last couple decades. That’s the role of the “big brother” that the Father gave to the Catholic Church to lay the foundation for the New Revelation of the “Eternal Gospel” for “every nation, tribe, language and people” as prophesied in Revelation 14:6, which is the New Millennium Testament the Christ/Messiah for the “Second Coming” bring forth for the New Millennium Kingdom as prophesied in Revelation 20:1-5. I hope the Protestant Christians or Evangelical Christians can be more open-minded to the New Revelation of God for all Children of God on the earth.

Now, as the Messiah for the “Second Coming” has come, it’s time for all Christians to be united and learn from each other for the New Millennium Kingdoms on the earth. Only when all Christians, whether Catholic, Protestant or any other denomination, are united then we can defeat the “Beast of Antichrist” and “lock up Satan for a thousand years” as prophesied in Revelation 19:17- 20:5.

God Bless!
